22 November 2017 - Global engineering and infrastructure advisory company, Aurecon, has been recognised as one of Australia and New Zealand’s most innovative companies, being ranked 5th overall in the 2017 Australian Financial Review (AFR) Most Innovative Companies list.

Now in its sixth year, it’s the very first time a professional services firm has been included in the top five.

“To debut on the AFR list in the top five is a testament to how our people and our clients have embraced our strategy and passion for innovation,” says Global Chief Executive Officer Giam Swiegers.

He adds: “Only a few short years ago, we realised our future was being disrupted, and we recognised that in order to remain relevant to our clients, we needed to deliberately and passionately embrace innovation.”

The AFR Most Innovative Companies list is judged and compiled by Inventium – a leading innovation consultancy. Organisations are assessed in three unique ways. They must describe two innovations that have been implemented in the prior year, as well as explain how they are integrating and embedding innovation in their organisation. Employees of firms also complete an online survey to assess organisational performance on a range of innovation drivers.

Investing in leadership

He goes on to say: “The AFR award win demonstrates that we have made progress in our ability to think innovatively. Looking to the future, it’s imperative to continue to embed innovation as a way of doing. Aurecon wants to be known for its innovative approach across every aspect of our client’s experience of working with us, including the calibre of designs we bring to life.”

To further embed innovation as not only a way of being, but also a way of doing, Aurecon has made important alterations to its innovation team.

Previous Global Director of Excellence and Expertise, Dr Kourosh Kayvani’s role has been extended to include full responsibility for innovation across the company. Kourosh has for the last two years played a pivotal role in mobilising Aurecon’s global pool of leading experts to focus their technical mastery, deep insight and professional passion towards finding and solving the critical and complex problems of Aurecon’s clients. As someone who understands the role of practitioner deeply, he is perfectly positioned to bring about an even further step change in how Aurecon engineers translate innovation into meaningful outcomes for its clients.

Kourosh, who joined Giam’s Executive as Managing Director – Design, Innovation & Eminence, comments: “Now more than ever, we must ensure that creative and innovative design underpins the way engineers frame and solve problems facing humanity and our environment – such as urbanisation and extreme weather patterns,” says Kourosh.

Incubators of innovation

Kourosh, who has been prolifically awarded for his influence in the industry, most recently winning the John Connell Gold Medal from Engineers Australia – Structural College, is passionate about ensuring Aurecon’s brand is backed by substance and that it delivers with flair by challenging the status quo to take the organisation and its clients forward into a very different future.

He adds: “Aurecon believes that the things that made us successful in the past will not guarantee our success in future. The power of engineered design has been subsumed across our profession by too much focus on delivering conventional systems and operating within narrowly-defined functional elements. We have become supporters of design, rather than incubators of innovation to create unique solutions.”

The AFR recognition came a week after peak industry body Consult Australia named Aurecon Large Firm of the Year at its annual Awards for Excellence. Aurecon also won three Gold Awards and three Highly Recommended for its industry-leading contributions.
