Pranita Panicker, Aurecon

Civil Engineer

Location: Adelaide, Australia
Time at Aurecon: 1 year
Degree completed: Master of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Adelaide
Strongest Aurecon Attribute: Commercial

Even as a child, buildings and bridges fascinated me, and I guess that’s what really attracted me to engineering. In year 10, I was lucky enough to secure a 12-week summer internship at Aurecon, and there I came to know what each engineering field was all about. It became pretty clear that civil engineering was the one for me.

Video Transcript: Aurecon Graduate Pranita Panicker Commercial

I’m Pranita Panicker and I’m a civil engineer in the infrastructure team based in Adelaide.

I have always been fascinated about buildings and bridges. I guess that’s what really attracted me to engineering. After my Year Ten work experience at Aurecon, I really came to know what each engineering was all about. And I felt that civil engineering is the best for me.

As a civil engineer, my role is to design pavements, stormwater drainage, earthworks etc. It really varies depending on the projects. I’m currently working on quite a lot of Defence projects. Previously I’d been involved with the North Phase upgrade works for the Adelaide Festival Centre. Being part of the Riverside Precinct, Adelaide’s culture and history, it’s just great to be involved in a project like that.

Commercial is my strongest Aurecon attribute. I think I’m quite flexible and I adapt to the different working environments quite easily which I think is quite important when you’re working in that commercial environment.

I love everything about my work. But mostly it’s because I get that exposure to my technical field and also to the project management area, which I think is quite important when you’re involved in large scale projects.

The environment here is really great, everyone’s very supportive and there’s not one person that you can’t go up to and ask a question. From day one you won’t feel you’re part of a graduate programme. Really, you’ll just be so involved in work and the team’s quite supportive. I mean your mentors and supervisors are always there to keep an eye on you and be there for you whenever you need them.

It was my dream to join Aurecon once I became a qualified engineer and here I am.

My experience with Aurecon

In my role as a civil engineer at Aurecon, I’m involved in designing anything from pavements to storm water drainage to earthworks; it really varies, depending on the projects. This variety can be challenging, but it’s also what keeps me really interested and engaged at work.

One of the interesting projects I’ve recently been involved in is the north-face upgrade works of the Adelaide Festival Centre. Apart from enjoying the technical challenges this sort of project poses, I’ve loved working on something that’s part of the Riverside Precinct and part of Adelaide’s culture and history. This is one of the best things about working at Aurecon: the opportunity to work on the more interesting and important projects.

After working here for over a year, I’ve realised that my strongest Aurecon Attribute is being commercial. I’m flexible and I adapt to different working environments easily, which I think is critically important when you’re working in a commercial environment.

I love everything about my work, but the exposure to my technical field is still what’s most exciting. The opportunity to develop new skills is also great. Recently, I’ve been learning a lot about project management, for example, which is so important when you’re involved in large-scale projects.

My best advice to graduates

I think the environment here is what sets Aurecon apart. Everyone is really supportive, and there’s not one person you can’t go up to and ask a question. From day one, you won’t feel like you are part of a graduate programme, really. You’ll just be so involved in work, and the teams are so welcoming. Your mentors and supervisor are always there to keep an eye on you and be there for you whenever you need them.

It was my dream to join Aurecon when I became a qualified engineer, and here I am.
