The first phase of construction at the University of South Africa’s (UNISA) Muckleneuk campus began in the early 1970s, while the Sunnyside campus was obtained in the 1980s. In an ongoing programme of work, the old buildings were renovated to accommodate UNISA’s needs.
Aurecon provided the civil and structural engineering services for the majority of the UNISA buildings and the civil engineering for all roads and parking areas on both campuses.
Buildings that were designed included: academic I and II, administration I and II, the library, the computer centre, printing facility and various parking structures.
Other developments included new roads and parking, a footbridge and new services ducts. One of the challenges involved in the upgrading of the campuses, was the need to retain the historic style and ambience of both campuses, part of which included the extensive use of coloured-face concrete and pre-cast concrete façade panels.
