Bendigo Airport Redevelopment, Victoria, Australia

Aurecon delivered planning, design and construction works in the redevelopment of Bendigo Airport for the City of Greater Bendigo (CGB)

Prior to the airport upgrade, Bendigo was the largest regional centre in Australia without an airport that could accommodate regular public transport aircraft operations. As part of the City of Greater Bendigo’s (CGB) Strategic Plan, Bendigo Airport underwent a significant redevelopment to address a need for critical infrastructure to support the community, tourism and emergency services.

Providing a wide range of services across the entirety of the project, Aurecon could support the CGB in turning their strategic goal into reality. This included all airside planning, elements of landside planning, and specialist technical, advisory, operational and management assistance throughout the delivery phase.

Harnessing its broad expertise in the aviation market, Aurecon led infrastructure improvements that included a new runway, connection taxiways, a parallel taxiway and apron expansion. A new aeronautical ground lighting system was also delivered, along with an upgrade to primary and secondary wind direction indicators, stormwater drainage network, perimeter security and wildlife fencing. Given the need for aircraft operations to be ongoing during construction, safety and constructability were at the forefront of all design elements.

Aurecon also provided stakeholder management services to the project. This involved hosting numerous workshops to assess risk, technical, financial, quality and compliance considerations. Information was regularly disseminated throughout the duration of the project to stakeholders ‒ from adjoining and local residents to Airport Committee members, CGB engineers and councillors, to major water utility company Coliban Water, Airservices Australia, the Bureau of Meteorology, and the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, as well as other Departments of both the State and Federal Governments.

As record rainfall fell during construction, Aurecon redesigned parts of the stormwater drainage system in a timely and innovative manner to ensure all temporary works installed did not become redundant and would ultimately be part of the final stormwater drainage system. Such effort prevented weeks of delay in construction activities.

Following the upgrade, Bendigo Airport powers the region’s economic growth and is expected to significantly increase tourism. This facility now has the potential to cater for more passengers, freight and emergency services in Greater Bendigo and the wider Loddon Mallee region.

Award Winning

The Bendigo Airport Upgrade ‒ Stage 2 project recently won the Civil Contractors Federation (CCF) Earth Awards 2017, for the category Project value AUD10 million - AUD30 million, and Small Regional Aerodrome of the Year at the 2017 Australian Airports Association National Airport Industry Awards.
