Level Crossing Removal Project: Blackburn, Heatherdale, Main and Furlong Roads, Australia

Removing dangerous level crossings to improve safety in our communities

The Victorian Government selected Aurecon, together with Alliance partners CPB Contractors and Arcadis, to deliver level crossing removals at four of Melbourne’s priority sites that included Blackburn Road in Blackburn, Heatherdale Road in Mitcham, and Main and Furlong roads in St Albans. The Alliance also included VicRoads, Public Transport Victoria and Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM) and was overseen by the Level Crossing Removal Authority.

The 480 million dollar package of works saw rail lines lowered under the road at each of the locations and new stations built at St Albans, Ginifer and Heatherdale. Train platforms were also relocated to below street level.

A multidisciplinary and collaborative Alliance

Aurecon drew expertise from teams across Infrastructure and Built Environment to provide a full package of engineering services. This included rail, civil, bridges, station design and support throughout the entire construction life cycle.

Project Leader, Georgina Mahony said, “This is a very important achievement for Aurecon that exemplifies the high level of dedication and collaboration between our team and Alliance partners. We were able to effectively work with our partners to fully understand the needs of the Client which in turn allowed us to successfully respond with innovative, cost effective solutions that will provide quality outcomes.”

The benefits

Removing the crossings will:

  • deliver significant safety improvements
  • improve travel around Melbourne
  • make our roads more reliable
  • stimulate economic growth by creating thousands of jobs during construction
  • revitalise local communities
  • enable more trains to run more often and on time

This project was completed in mid-2017 and forms part of the Victorian Government’s coordinated programme to remove 50 level crossings across Melbourne.
