NorthConnex, Australia

Aurecon teams up with SMEC to help return local streets to communities

NorthConnex will deliver significant benefits to communities by easing congestion on Pennant Hills Road, moving around 5 000 trucks a day underground and returning local streets to local communities.

Aurecon, teaming with SMEC, is working with the Lend Lease Bouygues Construction Joint Venture to provide consultancy services for the detailed design and construction of the motorway link between the M1 Pacific Motorway at Wahroonga (formerly known as F3 Freeway) to the Hills M2 Motorway at West Pennant Hills.

In particular, the project team are providing design services including road, tunnel, drainage, geotechnical, civil structures, and traffic and pavement designs.

The team also designed and defined exclusion zones and safe access provisions for NorthConnex.

NorthConnex will comprise 9 km twin motorway tunnels with height clearances of 5.3m. Each tunnel will be built with long-term capacity for three lanes, but will initially operate with two lanes and a breakdown lane in each direction.

Using NorthConnex, the journey from Newcastle (M1) to Melbourne will also be traffic light free, and provides an alternative route to Sydney's central business district (CBD), avoiding 40 sets of traffic lights along the Pacific Highway.
