Project in focus: South Island Line (East) (SIL(E)) Contract 901

The South Island Line (East) (SIL(E)) is a 7-km, medium-capacity railway extension connecting the Southern District of Hong Kong to the existing MTR network at Admiralty Station (ADM).

Once completed, the new line will transport passengers between the busy business district in Admiralty and the Southern Districts on Hong Kong Island, reducing traffic congestion and travel time between South Horizon and Admiralty as well as promote tourism and facilitate growth in the local economy.

SIL(E) Contract 901 involves complex tunneling within an urban environment, further complicated by an interface with an existing operational railway. Aurecon is providing geotechnical, civil and tunnel engineering for the SIL(E) where the new integrated ADM station will provide a convenient interchange among four rail lines. These works include an extension of the existing ADM station which will accommodate an interchange concourse, circulation areas and plant rooms, along with four new platforms to be constructed below and adjacent to the existing ADM station; two for the SIL(E) and two for the future Shatin to Central Link (SCL).

The scope of services carried out by Aurecon included a review of geotechnical data and hydrogeological assessments, design of temporary rock support for the 25-metre span station cavern, platform tunnels, overrun tunnels and alternative alignments for the supplementary emergency entrance (SEE) and also a means of egress (MoE) adits. Aurecon’s scope also included the alternative design for the permanent lining design for the station cavern, SEE and MoE adits.

Aurecon helped to develop techniques for the excavation methodology to be used on the congested site and adjacent to the underground structures.

Continuous consultation with key stakeholders has been crucial in enlisting their support and in identifying all design requirements.
